As meteorological winter nears its official end on March 1, Europe may not be done with winter weather just yet. A sudden stratospheric warming event over the North Pole—known as Stratwarming—could cause the Polar Vortex to weaken or even split, potentially triggering a late-season cold snap in parts of Europe, according to meteorologists from IlMeteo.
While temperatures across the continent have generally remained above seasonal averages, this atmospheric shift raises concerns about a final winter surge. Historically, such disruptions tend to send Arctic air plunging southward, though the effects are often more pronounced in eastern Europe, the United States, and parts of Asia rather than in western and central Europe.
Today’s Forecast for Trieste
Skies will remain mostly overcast, with low clouds dominating throughout the day. Overnight and into the morning, patches of mist or fog are possible, particularly in the Pordenone plains near the Veneto border. By evening, light rain may develop, with a higher chance of precipitation in the Isontino area. Temperatures will stay mild, in line with the season’s recent trend.
For now, forecasters are monitoring the situation closely. If the Polar Vortex does indeed collapse, Europe could see a shift in weather patterns as winter delivers one last surprise.
