The Mondofuturo Literary Award has opened submissions for its second edition, recognizing the best original (non-translated) science fiction book published in Italy during 2024. The competition, which aims to foster cultural interest in science and literature, is jointly organized by Area Science Park, a national research institution, and La Cappella Underground, the organizing body behind the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival.
The award seeks to explore the intersection of science and science fiction, a genre that, as noted by the acclaimed author Philip K. Dick, is well-suited to those seeking to address difficult questions about the world. The award is open to both individual authors and publishers, who may submit up to two works, including novels, short stories, or collections. The works must be related to the science fiction genre but are not required to belong to a specific series or collection.
The finalists will be chosen by a jury composed of journalists, writers, and university professors. The winner will be selected by a panel of scientists, who will consider the book’s ability to offer a compelling vision of science, technology, and society. The award ceremony will take place during the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival from October 28 to November 2, 2025.
The deadline for submissions is April 1, 2025. The competition rules and participation forms are available on the official website.
Caterina Petrillo, President of Area Science Park, emphasized the growing importance of the scientific community in the award’s selection process. For the 2025 edition, researchers from Area Science Park, along with prominent international scientists, will be involved in selecting the final winner.
In addition, La Cappella Underground is considering extending the initiative to include high school students, with the aim of further engaging younger audiences in science fiction and its connection to science.
