The historic Muggia Carnival, one of Italy’s most cherished pre-Lenten celebrations, returns for its 71st edition from February 27 to March 5, promising a vibrant week of parades, music, and tradition.
The festival, famous for its elaborate floats and masked performers, will culminate with its grand parade on Sunday, March 2. Eight local carnival companies will compete with themed performances, including “Japanese Soul,” “Coffee Time,” and “Chickens!” Grandstand tickets are available via Ticketpoint Trieste.
“This event is the beating heart of Muggia,” said Mayor Paolo Polidori, expressing gratitude to organizers. Outgoing Carnival Companies President Mario Vascotto, marking his final year in the role, reflected on his 55 years of involvement: “It’s time to pass the torch, but I am proud of what we’ve built.”
For the first time, the city will introduce special events for 11-14-year-olds, complementing the beloved children’s parade and traditional Ballo della Verdura. The festival will also feature food stalls and live entertainment throughout the historic center.
Authorities have implemented new security measures, including adjusted alcohol sale hours and earlier closing times for music venues, following recent public order concerns.
In the event of inclement weather, the parade will be postponed to March 9. Full details are available at www.carnevaldemuja.com.
