Commuters in cities across Italy are bracing for disruptions to local public transport services on Monday, February 24, as transport workers stage a nationwide 24-hour strike.

The strike, organized by the USB trade union, is expected to affect bus, subway, and tram services throughout the country. The extent of the disruption will vary from city to city, with operators implementing different service guarantees to mitigate the impact on travelers.

In Trieste, the city’s transport authority has announced that public transport services will be guaranteed during peak commuting hours: from the start of service until 9 a.m. and again from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The USB union has cited multiple grievances in calling for the strike, including opposition to the government’s budget plans, demands for the renewal of national labor contracts, and calls for reduced working hours.

While the local transport strike is set to proceed, a separate nationwide train strike that had been scheduled for the weekend of February 22-23 has been called off, offering some relief for long-distance travelers.

For official updates and information on transport disruptions, travelers are advised to visit the Italian Transport Ministry’s website.
