The Italian Navy’s flagship, the LHD Trieste, has arrived at Molo Audace as part of a broader celebration of Italy’s maritime heritage. The vessel is in Trieste for events surrounding the visit of the Amerigo Vespucci, the historic training ship often described as the most beautiful ship in the world.
The Trieste is a multi-purpose amphibious assault ship, classified as a landing helicopter dock (LHD). It serves as both an aircraft carrier and a platform for amphibious operations, replacing the Giuseppe Garibaldi and now standing as the largest vessel in the Italian fleet.
Ordered as part of the 2014–2015 naval program, the Trieste was constructed at the Castellammare di Stabia shipyards by Fincantieri, one of Italy’s leading shipbuilding companies. After years of development, the ship was officially commissioned into service on December 7, 2024, at the Italian Navy’s base in Livorno.
The vessel’s presence in Trieste highlights the city’s deep maritime traditions and its role as a key hub for naval and commercial shipping. The ongoing events provide an opportunity for the public to engage with Italy’s seafaring legacy, from historic vessels to modern naval power.
