The historic Ausonia beach facility, a landmark on the Adriatic coast, is set to undergo a major restoration following approval from Italian authorities. The project, backed by the Friuli Venezia Giulia regional government with an estimated investment of 2.28 million euros ($2.47 million), aims to preserve and enhance the site’s cultural and historical significance.

Regional Councillor for Infrastructure and Territory Cristina Amirante announced the development, highlighting the collaboration between the region and the Port System Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea, which oversaw the design phase. The project received approval from the Superintendence on December 18, paving the way for its implementation.

“The milestone we have reached demonstrates the effectiveness of institutional synergy in pursuing shared goals for the territory,” Ms. Amirante said, emphasizing the commitment to restoring and protecting the facility.

Built in the 1930s and later expanded to incorporate the Savoia baths in the 1950s, the Ausonia complex has been a fixture of Trieste’s waterfront for nearly a century. The restoration will address structural deterioration, including a section that collapsed in 2019, while preserving the original reinforced concrete design. Planned improvements include repairs to walkways, seating areas, and visitor facilities.

Though the Port Authority cannot directly finance the project, it will act as the contracting authority and oversee its execution. Officials have also expressed plans to engage the public through communication initiatives on the project’s progress.

The restoration of the Ausonia facility is expected to enhance Trieste’s coastal appeal while ensuring the preservation of a historic site that has long been a part of the region’s cultural landscape.
