The 44th Junior World Alpine Ski Championships officially kicked off Wednesday in the picturesque alpine town of Tarvisio, drawing more than 350 of the world’s most promising young skiers from 60 nations. Running through March 6, the event is set to transform this northeastern Italian resort into a global stage for the sport’s rising stars.
For Tarvisio, nestled at the meeting point of Italy, Slovenia, and Austria, this marks a return to the international spotlight—23 years after it first hosted the championships. The competition will unfold across two renowned slopes: the scenic Di Prampero, known for its sweeping length and natural beauty, will host speed events and team races, while the technically demanding Priesnig B will challenge slalom competitors.
The opening ceremony took place Wednesday evening in Tarvisio’s Piazza Unità d’Italia, which has been temporarily renamed Medal Plaza for the duration of the championships. Each night, the square will host medal ceremonies, culminating in the final awards and closing festivities on March 6.
In an effort to align with sustainable practices, organizers have introduced environmentally conscious touches to the event. Instead of the traditional fresh-flower bouquets, winners will receive recycled-paper diplomas embedded with flower seeds, designed to be planted after the event. The trophies, too, reflect the region’s natural heritage, crafted from locally sourced wood.
With its multicultural charm and breathtaking alpine scenery, Tarvisio is poised to deliver an unforgettable championship—one that not only showcases the next generation of elite skiers but also celebrates the region’s traditions and commitment to sustainability.
