Poet Franca Mancinelli, recognized as one of the leading voices in contemporary Italian poetry, will be featured in a two-day event at the LETS Museum in Trieste on March 7 and 8. The event, part of the LETSpoetry series, is included in the Municipality of Trieste’s cultural program for International Women’s Day.
On Friday, March 7, at 6 p.m., Mancinelli will engage in a discussion at the museum’s Spazio Forum. She will be joined by Olmo Andrea Calzolari, the curator of the series, along with Luca Geroni, head of the Quarantotti Gambini Library, Riccardo Cepach, LETS representative, and translator Barbara Šarić. The discussion will explore themes central to Mancinelli’s work, including borders, language, and poetry as a form of reportage. Her writing, which often examines movement across linguistic and cultural frontiers, will be a focal point of the conversation.
The following day, March 8, at 10 a.m., Mancinelli will lead a writing workshop titled “Preserve and Sacrifice.” The session will focus on the refinement and selection of poetic material, emphasizing the balance between preservation and omission in the creative process. The workshop, which is limited to 15 participants, requires prior registration.
Mancinelli, born in 1981 in Fano, Italy, has been recognized for her work in poetry, serving as a juror for the Pordenonelegge literary festival and the Premio Saba. Her 2020 collection, Tutti gli occhi che ho aperto (All the Eyes I Have Opened), won the Premio San Vito al Tagliamento and Premio Europainversi, further establishing her as a significant figure in contemporary poetry. Her writing, which frequently engages with themes of displacement and observation, has been shaped by her experiences traveling across the Adriatic region, particularly in Croatia and the Balkans. Her works, including Taccuino croato (Croatian Notebook), reflect her role as a poet-reporter documenting the refugee crisis and borderland histories.
The LETS Museum, located in Piazza A. Hortis in Trieste, is dedicated to literary and cultural events. Attendance for the discussion is open to the public, subject to capacity, while workshop participation requires advance registration by March 6. Additional details are available at lets.trieste.it.
