As Gorizia and Nova Gorica take center stage as the European Capital of Culture in 2025, the Trieste Film Festival is marking the occasion with a powerful cinematic retrospective. On March 20 and 21, the festival will present 1945. The War is Over? Trauma, Ruins, Reconstruction, a curated selection of films at the Kinemax in Gorizia, exploring the seismic shifts of a year that reshaped the world.

Curated by film historian Francesco Pitassio, the retrospective offers a deep dive into cinema from 1945—a year that signified both the devastation of World War II and the fragile beginnings of a new Europe. Through archival footage and rare screenings, audiences will witness not only the scars left by war but also the resilience and optimism that defined the post-war era.

The program is structured into five thematic sections—Ruins, Childhood, Returns, Camps, and Borders—each addressing a different facet of the collective experience of 1945. Accompanied by introductions from historians and film experts, these screenings provide historical context and a lens through which to reflect on the lasting impact of that pivotal year.

The retrospective is part of the Trieste Film Festival’s tribute to GO!2025, an initiative celebrating the cross-border cultural synergy between Italy and Slovenia. All films will be presented in their original language with Italian and English subtitles, ensuring accessibility to an international audience.

Admission to the screenings is free, underscoring the festival’s commitment to fostering cultural engagement and dialogue. As Gorizia and Nova Gorica embrace their role as a cultural epicenter, this cinematic journey serves as both a historical reflection and a timely reminder of the power of storytelling in shaping collective memory.
