On Monday, March 17, the city of Trieste commemorates National Unity Day, an annual observance recognizing Italy’s unification, as well as its Constitution, national anthem, and flag. The occasion is marked each year on March 17, the date in 1861 when Italy was officially unified in Turin.

Established by law in 2012, the day serves as a reminder of the nation’s historical milestones and shared identity. To honor the event, the Italian Tricolor will illuminate the municipal building in Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia, a central landmark in Trieste. The Municipality will be lit up in the colors of the Italian flag, creating a striking visual tribute to the nation’s unity and heritage.

Trieste joined in the national celebrations with official ceremonies and symbolic displays, highlighting the city’s historical ties to Italian unity. While not a public holiday, the day is observed with events across the country, emphasizing the values enshrined in the nation’s Constitution and the significance of national unity.

The unification of Italy, a process spanning much of the 19th century, culminated in 1861 with the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy. Turin served as the first capital before the government later moved to Florence and eventually to Rome in 1871.

As Italy continues to navigate contemporary challenges, National Unity Day remains a moment for reflection on the country’s past and the principles that continue to shape its democracy.
