The acclaimed Italian director and actor Andrea Ortis returns to the stage with Van Gogh Café Opera Musical, a production inspired by the life and works of Vincent van Gogh. The musical, featuring a live orchestra and immersive 3D projections, will be performed at the Politeama Rossetti in Trieste on March 17 and 18 as part of the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia’s season.

Produced by MIC International Company, Van Gogh Café is set in a Parisian Café Chantant, an artistic hub where musicians, dancers, and intellectuals once gathered. The show blends music, dance, and visual storytelling to bring Van Gogh’s art to life, with projections of iconic paintings such as The Starry Night and Wheatfield with Crows.
Ortis, known for Il Vajont di tutti and a musical adaptation of The Divine Comedy, directs and stars as M. Louis Philippe, an antiquarian who discovers Van Gogh’s letters to his brother Theo. The narrative unfolds as café workers and performers find reflections of their own struggles and dreams in the artist’s life. The cast includes Floriana Monici as the lead singer Madame Odile, Chiara Di Loreto as the aspiring dancer Aline, and Raffaele Ficiur as Luc, a waiter drawn into Van Gogh’s story.
Musical arrangements by Antonello Capuano and Francesco Coia incorporate French chanson influences, with nods to Edith Piaf and Charles Aznavour. Choreographer Marco Bebbu fuses flamenco and contemporary dance to evoke the emotional intensity of Van Gogh’s work.
Tickets are available through the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia’s official channels. More information can be found at www.ilrossetti.it.
