A large boulder tumbled onto the railway tracks near Aurisina on Tuesday morning, halting train service on one of the main lines connecting Trieste to Udine, Venice, and Ljubljana.
The incident led to the temporary closure of the line as technicians from Rete Ferroviaria Italiana worked to clear the tracks and restore service.
The disruption caused significant delays, with trains to and from Udine, Venice, and Ljubljana running up to an hour behind schedule. Commuters and travelers faced widespread inconvenience, as the affected routes are key connections for both domestic and international rail traffic.
Officials have yet to determine the cause of the rockfall, though the area’s steep terrain has been known to pose risks, particularly after periods of heavy rain. Authorities are assessing whether additional safety measures are needed to prevent future incidents.
Rail service was gradually resuming by midday, though residual delays were expected throughout the afternoon.
