In a strategic move to promote the region’s rich cultural heritage, Friuli Venezia Giulia will take center stage at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, with an innovative partnership with the Pordenone-based Palazzo del Fumetto Association. The regional government has approved an agreement that ensures the association’s participation in the highly anticipated international event, set to take place from late April to early May 2025.

The initiative, spearheaded by Mario Anzil, Vice President of Friuli Venezia Giulia and regional leader for culture and sports, will focus on blending modern art with local traditions. A contribution of 76,100 euros will fund the creation of a 24-page, color comic story that encapsulates the essence of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The comic will be displayed at the region’s booth during the Expo, alongside a cutting-edge virtual reality exhibition.

Expo attendees will have the opportunity to explore the International Museum of Comic Art in Pordenone using 3D headsets, providing a digital window into the museum’s extensive collection. Furthermore, families will be encouraged to engage in hands-on activities through workshops that offer a creative, interactive way to learn about the region’s cultural identity.

“Comic art is a universal language, and in Japan, it is particularly revered. This makes it a perfect medium through which we can showcase the uniqueness of Friuli Venezia Giulia on the world stage,” said Anzil in a statement. “This initiative is not just about art, but also about embracing a modern approach to cultural exchange.”

The collaboration with the Palazzo del Fumetto Association is a testament to the region’s forward-thinking approach to cultural promotion. By leveraging the global appeal of comics, Friuli Venezia Giulia aims to make a lasting impression on a diverse international audience, highlighting both its artistic heritage and its contemporary vibrancy.
