Travelers in Italy’s northeast will face significant disruptions to rail services later this month as Trenitalia carries out infrastructure upgrades on the critical Verona-Vicenza corridor. The temporary suspension of train service between Verona Porta Nuova and Vicenza from 8:10 p.m. on March 22 to 7:50 a.m. on March 23 is expected to cause delays and reroutings across the region.

The Italian rail operator announced that the Frecciarossa and EuroNight high-speed services will be affected, alongside regional trains. To mitigate the impact, Trenitalia will deploy replacement buses, though passengers should anticipate longer travel times and changes to their usual routes.

Major Changes and Impact

During the closure, some rail connections between Venice and Verona will be rerouted, resulting in cancellations of stops at Vicenza, San Bonifacio, and Verona Porta Vescovo. Commuters relying on these stations will have to board substitute bus services, which Trenitalia warns may be subject to road traffic delays.

Passengers aboard Frecciarossa trains on the Turin-Milan-Venice-Udine-Trieste route will also see adjustments to their schedules and routes, with some trains skipping stops in Vicenza, Brescia, Peschiera del Garda, Desenzano, and Verona Porta Nuova. Meanwhile, regional trains between Verona and Vicenza will be partially suspended, with buses filling in the gaps.

Trenitalia emphasized that the service interruptions are necessary for essential maintenance and infrastructure improvements led by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana.

Challenges for Passengers

The replacement buses will operate without accommodations for bicycles, and animals will not be allowed on board, except for assistance dogs. Passengers should also be aware that bus schedules may fluctuate due to unpredictable road conditions.

For those affected, Trenitalia recommends checking for real-time updates via its official channels, including its website (www.trenitalia.com) and mobile app. The rail company has also activated a toll-free assistance line at 800 89 20 21 for inquiries.

Service updates will be communicated via email and SMS notifications to ticket holders.

With significant travel disruptions expected, authorities are advising passengers to reconsider travel plans or allow for extended journey times.
