Starting June 26, Trieste will once again be connected to some of the Adriatic’s most sought-after destinations, including Piran, Poreč, Rovinj, and Mali Lošinj, with the resumption of maritime line services. The service, a sustainable transportation option eagerly awaited by both locals and tourists, will be operated by Liberty Lines for the next three years, a move welcomed by the region’s officials.

The announcement was made today by Cristina Amirante, Regional Councillor for Infrastructure and Territory, who highlighted the significance of the service as part of a broader effort to strengthen regional connectivity. The return of the maritime route follows a negotiated procedure after the open tender held in December 2024 failed to deliver a successful outcome. Liberty Lines, which previously operated on this route until 2023, has now been contracted to reinstate the service.

The contract, valued at approximately 4.5 million euros over three years, will provide daily international connections (except Tuesdays) between Trieste and the coastal cities in Slovenia and Croatia. This service aims to reduce reliance on cars, particularly during the high tourist season, while promoting eco-friendly alternatives for travel.

“Strengthening maritime mobility is a cornerstone of our regional strategy to foster an integrated, environmentally-conscious transportation network,” said Amirante. “This service, which was interrupted in 2024, now returns with a steady timetable, enhancing Trieste’s appeal as a tourist destination and encouraging cross-border movement in the northern Adriatic.”

The service will run from June 26 to September 1, 2025, with departures and arrivals at Molo IV in Trieste. Passengers will have access to routes linking Trieste with Piran, Poreč, Rovinj, and Mali Lošinj. The vessels will be able to accommodate over 180 passengers, with covered seating and space for at least 10 bicycles, ensuring that the service meets the needs of both commuters and tourists seeking to explore the Adriatic coastline.

This development marks a significant step forward in Trieste’s ongoing efforts to modernize its transport network and reinforce its role as a vital hub in the northern Adriatic.
