The celebrated Marriage of Figaro, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s operatic masterpiece, is being reimagined for a new generation at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste. In a fresh one-act version that blends Mozart’s score with new orchestration by Paola Magnanini and an updated libretto by Andrea Binetti, this production seeks to make the classic opera accessible and engaging for children and families.
This unique version, titled Le Nozze di Figaro: Fantasia in One Act, offers a creative retelling of the story, reducing the original four-act opera into a vibrant, condensed form that captures the heart of Mozart’s music and narrative. The production is aimed specifically at young audiences, with an emphasis on introducing them to the beauty of classical opera in a fun and approachable way. This new adaptation, designed to be engaging and educational, also features the Verdi Orchestra’s chamber ensemble, led by renowned concertmaster Stefano Furini. Furini, a familiar face in Trieste’s musical community, has played a pivotal role in shaping the orchestra’s performances both in Trieste and across the globe.
“Opera has always been a part of Trieste’s cultural fabric, and this project continues our mission to bring great works of classical music to younger audiences,” said Binetti, who also directs and designs the production. “We want to create a space where families can connect with the arts in a meaningful way, and where children can learn while having fun.”
The reduced chamber version of the opera is the result of the work of Magnanini, an experienced composer known for her expertise in adapting classical music for younger listeners. Her work has garnered attention for its ability to hold the interest of modern audiences with shorter attention spans, while still honoring the complexity of the original compositions. Her approach to The Marriage of Figaro allows Mozart’s famous arias and ensemble pieces to shine in an intimate, chamber setting, offering a fresh perspective on the timeless opera.
The production’s libretto was crafted by Binetti, whose longstanding relationship with the Teatro Verdi has made him a beloved figure in the city’s opera scene. Binetti, who also plays the role of Figaro and the Narrator, has had a hand in numerous successful productions, earning accolades for his inventive adaptations of classic works. He is joined by a talented cast that includes local stars such as Marzia Postogna as Marcellina, Veronika Foia as the Countess of Almaviva, and Kevin Baliviera as the Count himself. The cast also features Stefania Seculin as Cherubino and Giacomo Segulia as Bartolo.
“This is an opera with a story that children can easily relate to—full of love, humor, and intrigue,” said Seculin, whose portrayal of the young Cherubino promises to bring warmth and charm to the production. “The lively, joyful music of Mozart will captivate them.”
The Marriage of Figaro is set to be performed at the Victor de Sabata Hall, a cherished space within the Teatro Verdi that has become a hub for cultural exchange in Trieste. The Ridotto, or “living room” of the theater, is a welcoming space for both locals and visitors, with performances that range from one-act operas to musical press conferences and special events. With its open-door policy, the Ridotto is a space where anyone in Trieste can feel at home, whether they are seasoned opera-goers or first-time attendees.
This production, which runs from March 25 to May 3, is part of the Teatro Verdi’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, accessible cultural programming. The opera’s charm and wit, paired with a musical score that is sure to captivate, make it an ideal introduction to the world of opera for children. The production is designed to foster a connection to classical music from an early age, ensuring that the audience of tomorrow has a deep appreciation for the genre.
Tickets for the performances are available at the theater’s box office and are priced at 10 euros, with discounts for children and students.
