The Friuli Venezia Giulia Region has reaffirmed its support for Obermun, the Model United Nations (MUN) initiative led by Trieste’s Oberdan Scientific High School, now in its ninth edition. The event, scheduled from April 4 to April 6, will transform the high school into a simulation of the United Nations, with students taking on the roles of diplomats tasked with addressing global issues.

Regional Councillor for Education Alessia Rosolen expressed the region’s ongoing commitment to the event, noting its educational value and alignment with regional goals for internationalizing the school system. “Obermun has proven its worth in educating and guiding students, offering an effective model of internationalization for the school system,” Rosolen said.
This year, the event will involve 160 students from Oberdan, including 120 delegates, as well as participants from schools in the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Venice, and other Trieste-based institutions. Students will engage in discussions covering a range of pressing global topics, such as NATO-Ukraine relations, the use of private satellites in space, military bases, desertification, landmines, and the protection of monuments in conflict zones. English will be the exclusive language of communication during the proceedings.
The event will be hosted at the University of Trieste’s main hall, with the opening ceremony scheduled for April 4 at 10 a.m. and the closing ceremony on April 6 at 3 p.m. A gala evening will take place on the evening of April 5 at the historic Caffè San Marco.
At the event’s launch, held at the Regional Palace in Trieste, attendees included students and faculty from Oberdan, as well as a representative from the University of Trieste and Municipal Councillor Maurizio De Blasio. Rosolen also expressed hopes that the event will expand its reach in future editions, possibly broadening its impact to include more regional participation.
Obermun’s continued success highlights the growing interest in student-led initiatives that foster diplomatic skills and international cooperation, and it stands as a testament to the region’s investment in educational programs that provide young people with a global perspective.
