Regional officials have praised recent improvements to the access roads leading to Mount Zoncolan, a popular ski and outdoor recreation area in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The upgrades, aimed at regulating traffic flow, expanding parking, and improving public transportation stops, were evaluated during a site inspection on Wednesday.
“The improvements have streamlined access to the area, and we will now proceed with completing the remaining work,” said Cristina Amirante, the regional councillor for infrastructure and territory.
The inspection was attended by regional technical staff, local officials, including Sutrio’s mayor, Mattia Manlio, and representatives from FvgStrade and the Edr of Udine, the agencies overseeing the project.
The redevelopment, which began ahead of the current ski season, has added more than 700 parking spaces and relocated bus stops to improve efficiency. Local officials and PromoTurismoFVG, the agency responsible for tourism development in the region, said the upgrades have helped manage visitor flow even on peak days. The season has seen record attendance despite a lack of natural snowfall.
The next phase of the project will include sidewalks, retaining walls, embankments, and boundary walls made of stone and porphyry, as well as new public lighting and final road paving.
The total cost of the improvements so far is estimated at €2.4 million. Additional funding will be allocated once final project plans are approved, officials said.
