A new art and science exhibition, “A Different Kind of Sea,” opened Friday at Sala Veruda, launching the fifth edition of MareDireFare – Festival of the Ocean, which will run through April 16.

The exhibition features work by eight comic artists from across Italy and centers on the impact of climate change and human activity on the marine environment. The event is part of an ongoing initiative to raise awareness of ocean conservation through the collaboration of scientists and artists.

The festival, which began as a joint project of the WWF Miramare Marine Protected Area and the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS), was developed in the context of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030).

A program of public events and educational workshops for teachers, librarians, and journalists will accompany the exhibition throughout the city.

The festival is co-organized by the City of Trieste and several local and national cultural institutions, with support from the Friuli Venezia Giulia regional government and media partners including Rai Radio 3, RAI FVG, and LifeGate.
