Friuli’s Monte Prât Hosts Scenic Food and Wine Walk with a Sustainable Twist

Nestled high above the valley floor, with views that stretch from the Eastern Prealps to the Adriatic Sea, Monte Prât is more than just a scenic plateau. It’s a place where nature and tradition meet — and on May 11, 2025, it will again become the stage for “Un Altopiano Tutto da Gustare” (“A Plateau of Flavors”), a beloved food and wine walk that turns this serene corner of Friuli into a vibrant celebration of taste, heritage, and community.

Organized by the local cultural association Pro Loco Forgaria nel Friuli, the event has become a hallmark of spring in northern Italy, drawing locals and travelers alike into the rolling greenery for a day of rustic indulgence and cultural discovery.

A Walk Through Time and Taste

Participants in the event, now in its latest edition, are invited to follow a route that winds through Monte Prât’s historic hamlets, pausing at rustic stone huts known as stavoli, where locals offer tastings of regional delicacies. These include creamy artisan cheeses, hand-sliced cured meats, hearty breads, and an impressive array of local wines and craft beers.

Each stop tells a story — of the land, of the people, and of recipes passed down through generations. The event also includes guided walks and interpretive tours, offering insights into the area’s layered history and the resilient communities who have long called this high plateau home.

Sustainability Meets Tradition: A Vegetarian First

In a nod to evolving palates and environmental awareness, this year’s edition introduces a new tasting station in the forested hollow of Val Scure — the “Dark Valley.” There, guests will find a menu entirely vegetarian, crafted from seasonal, locally grown ingredients. The addition reflects a broader effort to blend tradition with sustainability, without compromising on Friulian flavor.

“We wanted to offer something new, something thoughtful,” said organizers from Pro Loco Forgaria nel Friuli. “This station is not just for vegetarians — it’s for anyone who loves good food and wants to experience a different side of our cuisine.”

An Invitation to Wander

Whether it’s the call of wildflowers in bloom, the taste of a hand-poured wine under a canopy of trees, or the warmth of a story shared over polenta and Montasio cheese, Un Altopiano Tutto da Gustare is more than an event — it’s an experience. A slow walk through a landscape where time moves differently, flavors run deep, and every path leads to something delicious.
