Regional authorities in Friuli Venezia Giulia reaffirmed their commitment this week to the redevelopment of Trieste’s historic Porto Vecchio, announcing plans to expand digital infrastructure and repurpose several buildings in the area.

Speaking at a shareholders’ meeting of the Ursus Consortium on Wednesday, Regional Councillor for Public Assets and State Property Sebastiano Callari said that, in addition to previously allocated funding for the relocation of regional offices, a comprehensive 5G network is set to be developed across the site. The project, carried out in partnership with the Municipality of Trieste and regional IT company Insiel, is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

The meeting, which included the approval of the consortium’s 2024 financial statements, brought together representatives from several key stakeholders involved in the redevelopment initiative, including the Municipality of Trieste, the Eastern Adriatic Sea Port Authority, the Ministry of Culture’s regional secretariat, and the Ursus Consortium itself.

Officials confirmed that three buildings—Warehouses 7 and 10, along with Building 118—will house various regional administrative offices, with Building 118 designated for the Office of the Presidency. Hangar 21, another structure within the redevelopment area, will be transformed into a technological innovation hub.

In addition to administrative and innovation spaces, the redevelopment includes several new amenities. A rooftop extension on the two main warehouses will feature a restaurant and a gym. A 44-place nursery school is planned for the ground floor of Warehouse 10, with 20 places reserved for the children of regional government employees.

Describing the initiative as “an ambitious and constantly evolving project,” Callari said the work aims to consolidate public services and bring new life to the long-dormant port area.
