The Mayor of Trieste, Roberto Dipiazza, paid tribute to Pope Francis during a City Council session on Monday, following the pontiff’s recent death. The session, which included an address by the Bishop of Trieste, Monsignor Enrico Trevisi, offered a moment of reflection on the legacy of the late pope.
Calling the occasion “a historic moment for the Catholic Church and the international community,” Mayor Dipiazza described Pope Francis as a leader who spoke with “humanity, courage, and openness,” and who conveyed messages of peace, social justice, and environmental stewardship.
“His words were simple yet profound, resonating with both believers and non-believers,” the mayor said. “In a time marked by division and conflict, his Pontificate served as a moral and spiritual guide that sought to unite rather than divide.”
Trieste, a port city known for its religious and cultural diversity, was among the places visited by Pope Francis during his papacy. The mayor recalled the pontiff’s visit to the city on July 7, 2024, describing it as “memorable” and deeply meaningful to local residents.
Bishop Trevisi also addressed the council, offering further reflections on the pope’s life and influence. His remarks were shared in a statement following the session.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, served as the head of the Roman Catholic Church since 2013. His papacy was marked by efforts to promote inclusivity, address climate change, and modernize aspects of church doctrine.
