The APU Old Wild West Udine basketball team has secured promotion to Italy’s top-tier Serie A league for the first time in 16 years, marking a significant milestone for the club and its supporters.

The promotion was celebrated Sunday at the Carnera Arena in Udine, where regional officials joined fans and team members in recognizing the achievement. Among them was Mario Anzil, vice president of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region and regional councillor for sport, who praised the club’s long-term commitment and described the promotion as “a historic result.”

Anzil pointed to the team’s success as evidence of the value of sustained investment in local sports. “This is a virtuous example for young people and for the regional sports community,” he said, noting that Friuli Venezia Giulia leads the country in sports-related funding.

The Carnera Arena, recently renovated with public support, was also highlighted as a key element in fostering competitive performance. Anzil called the facility “essential for continuing to aim high.”

The promotion brings Udine back into the national spotlight and represents a potential turning point for basketball in the region. “Serie A will be a new challenge,” Anzil said, “but I’m confident this team is ready.”
