This May, visitors to Trieste will have a rare opportunity to explore two of the city’s most iconic landmarks of industrial heritage: the former Electric Substation and the Hydrodynamic Power Plant of the Porto Vecchio — the historic “Old Port” currently undergoing a major transformation under the city’s Porto Vivo revitalization initiative.

As part of an ongoing collaboration between the City of Trieste and Italia Nostra, a national association dedicated to the preservation of Italy’s cultural and environmental heritage, guided tours of the two structures will be offered every Wednesday throughout the month. The initiative, led by Italia Nostra’s Trieste chapter, aims to highlight the historical and architectural value of these early 20th-century industrial buildings, which once powered and supported port operations.

Tours — which last approximately 90 minutes — will take place on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, May 7 at 9:30 a.m.
  • Wednesday, May 14 at 9:30 a.m.
  • Wednesday, May 21 at 9:30 a.m.
  • Wednesday, May 28 at 9:30 a.m.

Participants will meet at 9:15 a.m. in front of the Electric Substation at Viale Miramare 24/d. Advance reservations are required at least five days prior to each visit by emailing: trieste@italianostra.org.

In addition to the scheduled tours, Italia Nostra is also open to organizing custom visits for private groups on request, subject to availability and with the same reservation procedures.

Part of a broader cultural reawakening of the once-abandoned Porto Vecchio area, these tours offer an immersive look into Trieste’s rich maritime and industrial legacy — and a chance to witness a living example of urban renewal in progress.
