For culture lovers and history enthusiasts, the first Sunday of the month is about to get even better. On Sunday May 4, 2025, Trieste’s Civic Museums will once again participate in Domenica al Museo, an initiative spearheaded by Italy’s Ministry of Culture that allows visitors free entry to cultural institutions across the country.

The program, which has been a staple in Italy’s cultural calendar for years, provides complimentary access to museums and historical sites on the first Sunday of every month. In Trieste, the initiative includes several prominent institutions that typically require an admission fee. Among them is the Museo Revoltella, a 19th-century palace-turned-modern-art-museum that will reopen fully in the spring of 2025. In the meantime, visitors can explore its grand baronial residence at no cost. Other participating museums include the Castello di San Giusto, the Museo Teatrale Carlo Schmidl, the Museo della Guerra per la Pace Diego de Henriquez, and the Museo di Storia Naturale.

Additionally, Trieste boasts several museums that offer free admission year-round. These include the Museo del Mare, the Museo d’Arte Orientale, the Museo Sartorio, the Museo d’Antichità J.J. Winckelmann, the Risiera di San Sabba—a former Nazi concentration camp turned memorial—the Centro di Documentazione della Foiba di Basovizza, and the Museo del Risorgimento e Sacrario Oberdan. Visitors can also explore temporary exhibitions at Magazzino 26 without charge.

However, not all exhibitions fall under the initiative. Special temporary exhibits outside the standard ticket price and the large-scale shows at the Salone degli Incanti remain ticketed.

For those eager to immerse themselves in Trieste’s rich cultural landscape, this initiative offers an opportunity to step into history, art, and science—without spending a cent. Further details on collections and opening hours are available at triestecultura.it.
