Donata Vianelli has been appointed rector of the University of Trieste, becoming the first woman to lead the institution in over 20 years. A longtime faculty member in economics and business management, Vianelli begins her six-year term with a pledge to maintain institutional continuity while addressing mounting challenges in the Italian university system.
“The foundation is solid,” Vianelli said. “Now we must build on it, adapting to a landscape that is rapidly evolving.”
Vianelli cited Italy’s demographic decline, growing competition from online universities, and the looming end of EU-funded stimulus programs as key issues. “We’re entering a post-Pnrr phase after years of major investment. Innovation and strong regional and industrial partnerships will be crucial,” she said.
While acknowledging the appeal of online education, she emphasized the university’s commitment to in-person learning. “We don’t need to compete on the same terms, but we must remain competitive — offering high-quality programs and a valuable academic experience.”
Her election followed a decisive vote, particularly strong among students, against fellow candidate Professor Marina Garofolo. In an interview with InTrieste, Garofolo extended her congratulations: “I wish Professor Vianelli every success. The university is in good hands.”
Vianelli succeeds outgoing rector Roberto Di Lenarda, under whose leadership the university expanded its research profile and international collaborations. She has indicated that internal reorganization and careful financial planning will be part of her early agenda.
