A technical meeting was held yesterday at the regional government headquarters to assess the fallout from a residential roof collapse that occurred on March 25 in Villaggio del Pescatore, a coastal hamlet near Duino Aurisina, north of Trieste. The incident, which involved the partial collapse of a small house, has prompted officials to evaluate the broader safety of the area’s housing stock.

“The meeting with the mayor, municipal engineers, and our regional public works department served to take stock of the situation,” said Cristina Amirante, regional councilor for infrastructure and territory. “We are now working to establish an accurate picture of the current residents in the housing complex and will begin collecting detailed data on surrounding structures to mitigate any risks to the population.”

Villaggio del Pescatore—literally “Fisherman’s Village”—was developed in the early 1950s by the Ente Tre Venezie to house refugees from the Giuliano-Dalmatian exodus following World War II. According to fire department reports, the roughly 80 buildings in the neighborhood were likely constructed during the same period and with similar materials and methods, raising concerns about their structural integrity.

The house affected by the March collapse was located at number 128. While no injuries were reported, the sudden nature of the collapse has alarmed local residents and triggered calls for a comprehensive review of the aging housing stock.

Regional officials say they are now planning a follow-up meeting to identify possible funding sources to support urgent repairs and safety interventions. These could include assistance for both public housing residents and private homeowners, should their buildings be deemed at risk.

“It is essential to determine quickly whether this was an isolated incident or a sign of broader structural issues,” said Amirante, a member of the regional government led by Governor Massimiliano Fedriga. “The safety of the community is our top priority.”

The mayor of Duino Aurisina, Igor Gabrovec, was also present at the meeting. Local authorities have not yet ordered evacuations but have pledged to take swift action if further vulnerabilities are discovered in the neighborhood’s buildings.
