On Saturday, May 10, the village of Trebiciano on the Trieste Karst will host an inclusive guided walk as part of the “Passeggiando si impara 2025” program, organized by the Civic Museum of Natural History of Trieste. The initiative aims to make environmental education accessible to all, with a particular focus on intellectual disability inclusion.

The event, titled “Passeggiamo tutti assieme” (“Let’s Walk Together”), will welcome participants with intellectual disabilities, accompanied by facilitators from the Social Cooperative Trieste Integrazione, affiliated with Anffas, a national association supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The two-kilometer route—on a paved path suitable for wheelchairs—will include several stops highlighting the natural and geological features of the Triestine Karst. Topics will range from the region’s limestone and underground rivers, including the Timavo, to local caves and the elusive proteus amphibian, as well as flora, fauna, and emerging species in the area.

In an effort to foster inclusion, all information along the walk will be presented in Easy to Read language, a simplified format designed to be accessible to individuals with cognitive challenges, people with limited Italian proficiency, and families with young children.

Participants will receive a printed guide in Easy to Read Italian, which will also be available in audio format. An English-language version of the guide will be accessible digitally.

The group will meet at 2:45 p.m. in Trebiciano, with the exact return point disclosed upon reservation. The location is accessible via local buses 39/ and 51, with a short walk from the nearest stop. Reservations are required and can be made by calling or messaging +39 348 221 6216.

With initiatives like this, the city continues to take steps toward making environmental education a shared experience—regardless of ability.
