As part of Italy’s annual national campaign Il Maggio dei Libri (May, the Month of Books), the Library of the Civic Museums of History and Art in Trieste will host two events aimed at fostering reflection and discovery. The initiative, promoted by the Center for Books and Reading, underscores the enduring importance of books as tools for personal and collective growth.
A Rare Glimpse Behind the Scenes
On Wednesday, May 14 at 5:30 p.m., visitors will have the opportunity to take part in an exclusive guided tour of the library and photo archive’s storerooms, located on the third floor of Palazzo Gopcevich on Via Rossini 4. Titled “Foto Omnia by Ugo Borsatti: Between Books, Documents and Photographs”, the visit will be led by Claudia Colecchia, head of the museum’s photo library.
Participants will be granted rare access to the archives housing the legacy of Ugo Borsatti, a renowned Trieste photographer who passed away recently. Among shelves and storage boxes, stories emerge through images, volumes, and never-before-seen documents—a compelling journey into the visual and textual memory of the past.
Space is limited to ten participants. Reservations are required by May 13, via email: cmsabiblioteca@comune.trieste.it.
Revisiting Adriatic History
The second event, scheduled for Wednesday, May 21 at 5:30 p.m., will take place in the Sala Bazlen of Palazzo Gopcevich. Historian Fabio Todero will present his new book, La patria alla frontiera. Storia dell’irredentismo adriatico(The Homeland at the Frontier: A History of Adriatic Irredentism, Laterza, 2025).
Todero’s work explores a pivotal chapter in Adriatic history, engaging with the library’s rich collection of original documents on Adriatic irredentism. The presentation invites the public to revisit the past through fresh lenses and critical inquiry.
Admission is free while seats last.
