In his first Sunday address as pontiff, Pope Leo XIV appeared on the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, delivering a brief but forceful appeal for peace in Ukraine and Gaza.

“Never again war,” he said to tens of thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square, echoing the words of his predecessor, Pope Francis. The 69-year-old former bishop from Chicago called for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the delivery of humanitarian aid.

The pope also marked Mother’s Day, offering blessings to mothers around the world and prayers for those who have died. Smiling warmly, he lingered on the balcony, waving to children and clasping his hands in prayer.

Leo XIV’s appearance signaled a return to papal tradition and a clear intention to use his platform to advocate for peace and compassion amid global conflict.
