The neighborhood of Borgo San Sergio celebrated the reopening of its public playground on Wednesday, following a complete renovation carried out as part of the “Playground Revolution” initiative led by Pallacanestro Trieste.
The project was made possible through the efforts of the basketball club’s nonprofit arm, Il Cuore in Campo Pallacanestro Trieste ODV, and in close collaboration with the Comune di Trieste, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, the Regional School Office, Edilmaster – Trieste’s construction school – and several private partners.
The playground has been fully updated with a newly designed court, refurbished hoops, and modern, welcoming features. Among the most notable additions is the inclusion of Baskin markings and equipment—making it Trieste’s first outdoor court adapted for the inclusive sport, which allows people with and without disabilities to play together. The specialized Baskin baskets will be managed with the help of the nearby parish of Borgo San Sergio.
“The new playground is not just a sports facility, but a space for social integration, education, and community life,” said Michele Babuder, Trieste’s Councillor for Territorial Policies. “This is what good collaboration between institutions and local organizations can achieve.”
Regional Councilor for Environment and Urban Planning, Fabio Scoccimarro, echoed this sentiment: “This is a model project for urban renewal and inclusion. It shows how we can invest in neighborhoods to improve quality of life for all, starting with young people.”
Over 200 students submitted design proposals during the planning phase, reflecting strong community participation. Organizers hope the renewed space will become a central gathering place for the neighborhood and the city alike.
