On the third day of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, we sat down with Francesco Ruzzier, a representative of the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival and a member of the Capella underground collective that recently revitalized the historic Ariston movie theater in Trieste.
For Ruzzier, being present at the world’s most prestigious film festival is both an honor and a necessity.
“If you work every day with movies, it’s really important to be here,” he said during the interview on Thursday, May 15. “You see a lot of different ideas of cinema, and you can bring home new ideas, new experiences.”
Ruzzier, who is also involved in podcasting, explained that Cannes offers not only access to premieres and global talent, but also inspiration for content and conversation. “We’ll definitely talk about the new Ari Aster films,” he said, “but also Highest to Lowest by Spike Lee.”
The presence of Trieste’s film scene at Cannes underscores the growing ambitions of regional festivals to connect with the international cinema community. The Science+Fiction Festival in Trieste, known for its focus on genre films and innovation, continues to evolve thanks in part to connections made at global gatherings like Cannes.
Meanwhile, back home, the recent renovation of the Ariston cinema by the Capella underground has provided the city with a refreshed space for screenings and cultural events, signaling a renewed commitment to cinema in all its forms.
