Interview: FVG governor Massimiliano Fedriga
A new residential facility for students at the United World College (UWC) of the Adriatic was officially inaugurated on Friday in the coastal town of Duino, near Trieste. The event was attended by the president of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Massimiliano Fedriga, alongside regional officials Alessia Rosolen (Education) and Sebastiano Callari (Heritage).
The updated building, which will also house a new educational space, is part of a broader effort to modernize and expand the school’s infrastructure. According to Fedriga, the regional government supported the renovation project, which included seismic safety upgrades and substantial improvements to the facility as a whole.
“This intervention went beyond compliance with anti-seismic regulations,” Fedriga said during the ceremony. “It represents a significant enhancement of the building’s quality and utility for students.”
Founded in 1982, the UWC Adriatic is part of the global United World Colleges movement, which promotes international understanding through education. The Duino campus hosts more than 180 students from 82 countries, selected for their academic potential and commitment to service.
Fedriga praised the institution for fostering dialogue among young people from diverse backgrounds, including countries currently in conflict. “It’s extraordinary how this school enables young people from all over the world to engage in meaningful dialogue,” he said. “This is an educational experience of immeasurable value.”
The regional president also announced plans to propose expanded scholarship support for Italian students attending UWC campuses. Currently, only the regions of Piedmont and Sardinia offer such financial assistance. Fedriga said he would bring the proposal to the Conference of Regions to encourage broader adoption of similar measures.
The inauguration marks another step in the ongoing partnership between the regional government and the UWC, which continues to attract international students to Friuli Venezia Giulia while promoting values of peace, sustainability, and intercultural understanding.
