As efforts to build a more unified European space continue, a senior Italian official is calling for coordinated labor policies between Italy and Slovenia, particularly in the cross-border regions that have long been defined by economic and social mobility.

Speaking at the 52nd Regional Conference of the Maestri del Lavoro in Gorizia, Alessia Rosolen, the Regional Councillor for Labor of Friuli Venezia Giulia, emphasized the need for a shared framework for employment that transcends national borders.

“In constructing a common European space, it is essential to begin a concrete discussion about creating a joint labor area between Italy and Slovenia,” Rosolen said during her address at the event, which was titled “Culture and Values of Labor Without Borders.”

Rosolen underscored that the integration process must go beyond employment policies, and include social security systems, labor contracts, and mutual recognition of educational and professional qualifications.

“Only through coordinated pathways can we fully harness the potential of these territories,” she added, referring to the historical interconnectedness of the Italian-Slovenian border region.

The remarks come at a time when EU regions with shared borders are increasingly exploring bilateral agreements to address labor shortages, facilitate professional mobility, and streamline bureaucratic processes.

Gorizia, set to be a European Capital of Culture in 2025 along with its Slovenian counterpart Nova Gorica, has often been highlighted as a symbol of cross-border cooperation. Rosolen’s call reflects a broader push among regional governments to adapt to the evolving dynamics of a more integrated European labor market.
