The regional administration of Friuli Venezia Giulia expressed disappointment Sunday following the announcement by Roncadin Group that it is withdrawing from a planned acquisition of the Tirso industrial branch in Muggia — a deal that had been expected to safeguard jobs and industrial operations at the site.
In a formal communication received by the Region, Roncadin cited “recent developments — particularly those occurring since the end of March — which have revealed several significant and unforeseen uncertainties surrounding the Tirso operation.” These developments, the company stated, prevent it from securing clarity on both the direct and indirect costs, including risk-related factors, as well as the timeline of the transfer. The decision comes amid an ongoing negotiated resolution process initiated by Tirso at the end of 2024.
Following a March 19, 2025, request from Roncadin, the regional government had swiftly acknowledged the initiative’s regional significance. In response, it committed to supporting the creation of a public-private development agreement for a new food production facility in the Coselag industrial area of Muggia. Regional departments provided technical support to expedite the project, according to Labor Councillor Alessia Rosolen and Economic Development Councillor Sergio Emidio Bini.
The two officials expressed regret over the group’s withdrawal.
“We are disappointed by this decision,” Rosolen and Bini said in a joint statement, underscoring the Region’s readiness to facilitate the project and its commitment to industrial redevelopment in the area.
It remains unclear whether alternative proposals for the Muggia site will emerge.
