The city of Trieste has launched a new initiative aimed at increasing public safety and strengthening ties between residents and law enforcement. Dubbed the “Progetto Rioni Sicuri” (“Safe Neighborhoods Project”), the program debuted on Saturday, May 17, with the first mobile policing stations set up in the neighborhoods of San Giacomo and San Vito.

The initiative is spearheaded by the city’s Local Police force and involves a mobile unit from the Nucleo Polizia di Prossimità — a proximity policing division — setting up scheduled posts in various districts twice a week.

The inaugural event at Campo San Giacomo was attended by Caterina de Gavardo, Trieste’s Councillor for Urban Security, and Walter Milocchi, Commander of the Local Police. Both emphasized the importance of community-oriented policing as a way to foster trust and collaboration between residents and authorities.

According to the city’s schedule, the mobile unit will be present in four neighborhoods each week:

  • Wednesdays:
    • 9:30–11:00 a.m. in Borgo San Sergio (Piazza XXV Aprile)
    • 11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. in Valmaura (Piazzale Valmaura)
  • Saturdays:
    • 9:30–11:00 a.m. in San Giacomo (Campo San Giacomo)
    • 11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. in San Vito (Piazzale Rosmini)

Local officials hope the regular presence of law enforcement will not only enhance neighborhood safety but also make officers more accessible to citizens. The project is part of a broader strategy to increase visibility and preventative measures in public spaces.

Authorities have not yet announced how long the pilot program will run or whether it will be expanded to additional neighborhoods.
