On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at 5 p.m., the conference room of the Bastione Lalio at the Castle of San Giusto will host the talk “Grandi classiche: le ‘vie’ della mostra nella voce di un alpinista” (“Great Classics: The ‘Routes’ of the Exhibition in the Voice of a Mountaineer”). The event marks the final lecture in the series of public programs accompanying the exhibition “Verso le vette. L’alpinismo e Trieste” (“Towards the Summits. Mountaineering and Trieste”).
Curated by Anna Krekic and Flavio Ghio, the exhibition—on view through June 8 in the Bastione Fiorito—explores the deep connections between the city of Trieste and the world of mountaineering. Through historical artifacts, photographs, and personal accounts, it traces the evolution of climbing culture and the region’s role in alpine exploration.
The May 21 conference will focus on the enduring appeal of “vie classiche,” or classic climbing routes. These traditional paths, many established in the early 20th century, are not only physical challenges but also storied corridors of memory and legacy for climbers. For younger generations, retracing these routes can offer a connection to the origins of alpinism, contrasting with the modern emphasis on speed and performance.
The speaker, a seasoned mountaineer, will reflect on how these climbs represent more than just athletic achievement. They are, he argues, narratives in stone—routes that continue to teach, inspire, and bridge past and present in the mountaineering community.
The event is open to the public and is part of a broader effort to engage audiences with the cultural and historical dimensions of alpinism.
