This summer, the city of Trieste will open a new dog-friendly beach along the Benedetto Croce waterfront, even as final construction work continues. The beach, informally known as “Bau Beach,” will be accessible to both dog owners and the general public.

The project, located between the former Cedas area and the Pane Quotidiano outlet, is part of a larger €650,000 investment aimed at revitalizing the Barcola waterfront. In addition to Bau Beach, the plan includes new stairways to the sea, general maintenance, and a broader reorganization of the promenade.

Trieste’s Public Works Councillor Elisa Lodi, who is overseeing the initiative, said the city hopes to meet the needs of a growing number of dog owners. Trieste is home to more than 23,000 registered dogs, and the area also attracts many tourists traveling with their pets.

“Given that the breakwater rocks to protect the beach cannot be installed immediately, we’ve decided to make the space usable this summer and complete the project after the season ends,” Lodi explained following a recent inspection of the site.

Preliminary works are already underway. A small wall is being reinforced to delineate the dog area from the pedestrian path, where a hedge and water fountain will eventually be added. A temporary staircase will provide access to the beach in the meantime.

Elsewhere along the waterfront, new signs have appeared indicating a ban on swimming in the area where the Delfino Verde ferry docks.

Despite ongoing works, city officials hope the early opening of Bau Beach will offer a new, inclusive recreational option for residents and visitors alike during the peak summer months.
