The region of Friuli Venezia Giulia is emerging as a key player in the country’s transition toward renewable energy, according to a new report released by Italy for Climate.

The study, Climate Indicators for Italian Regions (CIRO), places Friuli Venezia Giulia third nationally in terms of installed green energy capacity per square kilometer. The report highlights the region’s rapid growth in renewable energy, particularly noting that its newly installed capacity has tripled over the past year. Currently, renewable sources account for 22 percent of the region’s energy consumption, exceeding the national average.

Regional Environment Councillor Fabio Scoccimarro welcomed the findings, describing the results as a validation of the region’s sustainable strategy. “This confirms that our vision is effective — one based on bold decisions, targeted investments, and a shared outlook for a sustainable future,” he said in a statement.

The CIRO report evaluates the environmental performance of Italy’s 20 regions, tracking progress on metrics such as emissions reductions, renewable energy adoption, and energy efficiency. In recent years, Friuli Venezia Giulia has pursued a series of initiatives aimed at decarbonization and environmental resilience.

While challenges remain, particularly in meeting long-term EU climate targets, the report points to Friuli Venezia Giulia as a model of accelerated progress in Italy’s broader ecological transition.
