From mobile phones and wallets to jackets and even a stereo speaker, the City of Trieste has released its monthly list of items recovered from public spaces, offering a snapshot of the surprisingly diverse array of belongings lost by residents and visitors in April.
Among the objects handed in last month were personal documents (both legally binding and otherwise), smartphones, tablets, wallets, ID holders, a book, a ring, various bags and backpacks, folders, pencil cases, earbuds, a walkie-talkie, a water bottle, a fan, a telescopic walking stick, toys, digital payment cards, jackets, boots, a helmet, keys, and glasses.
The city’s Citizen Services Office (Sportello al Cittadino) is responsible for cataloguing and storing these items. Those who believe they may have lost an item in April are invited to inquire in person at the office, located at Via Punta del Forno 2. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and on Mondays and Wednesdays also from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The office can also be reached by phone at 040 675 7222.
While some items may never be reclaimed, the city continues to serve as an intermediary between lost property and its rightful owners, reminding citizens that even the most ordinary objects can become part of a public record—if only for a moment.
