Train passengers across Italy should prepare for widespread disruption on Friday, May 23, due to a 23-hour national strike by railway workers employed by Ferrovie dello Stato, Trenitalia, Italo, and Trenord.
The strike, which will run from 1:00 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. local time, was originally scheduled for Saturday, May 17, but was postponed to avoid overlapping with the inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican.
The industrial action has been called by the USB and SGB trade unions as part of an ongoing campaign to secure the renewal of the national collective labor agreement in the rail sector. In addition to the two 23-hour strikes, a separate eight-hour protest by the national assembly of Ferrovie dello Stato workers will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Rail services operated by Trenitalia, Italo, and other national and regional providers may be subject to delays or cancellations throughout the day. Trenitalia has issued a warning to passengers, noting that while disruptions are expected, essential services will be maintained during weekday strike windows from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., in accordance with Italian law.
A list of guaranteed services is available on the official websites of Trenitalia and Italo.
