From May 21 to 23, 2025, Trieste is hosting the eighth edition of the inter-university doctoral conference titled “Law for Innovation in the European Legal Space.” Organized by the Universities of Trieste and Udine, the event brings together approximately 40 young legal scholars from 15 Italian universities. The conference aims to address current and emerging legal challenges within the European Union, including topics such as artificial intelligence, digitalization, immigration, environmental issues, food security, labor rights, the common market, and public order.
The conference features ten interdisciplinary thematic sessions, providing a platform for doctoral candidates to present their research and engage in discussions on various legal issues. Originally established in 2017 as a forum for doctoral students from regional universities, the conference has since expanded to include participants from across Italy, selected through a call for papers.
The event commenced with opening remarks from Massimiliano Fedriga, President of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, and directors of the legal departments of the participating universities. Subsequent sessions have covered topics such as fundamental rights, tax law in the era of artificial intelligence, sanctioning systems, civil liability in the digital age, and new challenges related to the environment, immigration, governance, and food security.
The final day of the conference will address issues including maritime law, corporate crisis and insolvency codes, civil and criminal procedures, and comparative analyses of administrative, labor, and commercial law between Italy and Spain. The conference will conclude with an address by Laura Montanari of the University of Udine, former coordinator of the doctoral program.
