G20 Trieste: Innovation in the Time of Pandemics

The G20 Digital Ministers’ Meeting is being held in Trieste today and tomorrow, August 5-6, in a major two-day event held under the Italian G20 presidency.

The meeting began on Thursday morning in the Magazzino 28 in Porto Vecchio area, attended by the digital ministers of 20 of the world’s largest economies together with 35 high-level cultural delegations.

The Minister for technological innovation and digital transition (MITD) Vittorio Colao chaired the session on “Digital Government” while the Minister of the Economic Development Giancarlo Giorgetti (MiSE) chaired the MITD-MiSE joint session “Enabling Digital Transformation”.

Minister Giorgetti said the goal of the G20 meeting in Trieste is to reach the signing of a joint declaration by the G20 ministers and various organizations “which includes a series of commitments on many issues” underlying that “the global approach to digitalization is essential while dealing with the safety of digital identity.”

This Ministerial Meeting aimed to define guidelines useful to build a common space for research and tertiary education within a people-oriented digital society, based on ethical values, transparency, and reliability of its outcomes.

Minister Colao added that “the post-pandemic world is in continuous transformation and we need to be able to keep up with it.” Colao told the journalists that “thanks to pandemics we found out just how many things we could’ve been doing digitally already” underlying the future of the digital innovation and transformation.

Tomorrow, 6 August, G20 will continue with Research Minister’s Meeting.
