Every Saturday we’re spotlighting remarkable local females who could change the way we look at the world. This Saturday is Claudia D’Atri’s turn, occupational psychologist with a couple of Master’s degrees behind her belt, born in Venice to Sicilian parents, married to the outgoing mayor since 2016.

One of the most remarkable things about Trieste’s first lady is that if you’re lucky enough to spend time with her, you feel like maybe you could be her friend. She seems to accept her place in our town’s history without letting it define her or dictate her behavior.

What’s your no-fail, go-for-it motivational song?

Claudia: The Gladiator’s soundtrack. It really lifts my mood in the morning or before the tennis match and gets me in the right state of mind.

What’s most important for your mental health?

Being and staying positive. So many people out there have a negative outlook on life. It takes continuous inner work to understand that staying positive pays off tenfold.

Who’s your hero?

My dad. He’s always been my rock, my guiding light through whatever fog was clouding my path.

What’s the one thing in life you’re so happy you did?

Deciding to graduate. And then getting my first Master’s in forensic psychology and my second Master’s degree in sport psychology.

Who’s the one person who changed your life?

Roberto.

What the world needs now is…

To get its priorities straight. To choose the values that would help everyone live an authentic, happy life. Every night I ask myself if there was anything I could’ve done better to be a better me. I wish everyone did the same.

What’s your favorite place in Trieste?

Our house in Grignano is so beautiful, we watch the sun go down every night. And, of course, Piazza Unità with its elegant beauty.

How do you define “soul mate”?

A person who understands you with just one look. Someone who would do anything to make you happy and always wants to see you smile.
