This story is part of the literary competition created by In Trieste magazine “Winter in Trieste” which was open to all writers living in Trieste.

In just one evening everything drastically changed… from being a joy transmitting day to becoming a disastrous outcome that no one would want to undergo…
It was an easy-going Saturday night, the air started to become cold, like your heart when you have experienced too many misfortunes. People were cheerfully visiting the “Castello di Miramare” while the sun had already disappeared and went visiting the other half of the world. Families were commenting about how they were really delighted with how Trieste met their expectations, in the meantime kids were playing hide and seek innocently. Teenagers were joking and laughing on the stone wall after the stressful week.
The visiting hours ended and everybody started to return back home or go to a typical restaurant to make the day even more special. What could go wrong? Everything was perfect! Like in a fairytale… but what if a fairytale ended with a misadventure? The faultless human beings were walking on the bumpy road in the middle of nature, with trees acting like a shield on them, almost as if Mother Nature assisted them. They didn’t know what would happen next so they just continued with their lives.
Out of the blue, without any warning, the trees started to be suspicious, they were extremely bent down, some branches started touching the heads of people (that at first didn’t bother that much but when more branches started curving they started to panic) as the first snowflakes of winter started to fall from the sky, like if they were the newborns of Mother Nature, the situation suddenly degenerated.
The trees seemed possessed by a malignant and fatal soul since they grabbed the petrified people by the legs and I imagine you don’t want to know what happened to them. Whilst this happened the snow was falling much more densely and rapidly. The situation sunk to an enervated condition. The snowflakes fell down in large quantities and it accelerated, blurring the vision, like the music of the orchestra when from being calm it changes to dramatic in a blink of an eye.
Isn’t it just unbelievable that you could be doing anything and you will not know what will happen next? Everything is unexpected, like life. This is why you should always love every second of the moments you experience, because they could be taken away from you at any moment, keep this in mind!
