Happy Pasquetta

Happy Pasquetta! What’s that you say? Only the second most important day after Easter Sunday in Italy -the Easter Monday! Pasquetta (which literally means “little Easter”) is the day Triestini venture out into the wild (osmize, Carso, Barcola or a friend’s backyard) and BBQ their hearts out, or just finish the delicious leftovers from the day before. All accompanied by a few glasses of Malvasia and Refosco, certamente.

Pasquetta is also known as Lunedì dell’Angelo (literally: Angel’s Monday), a reference to Biblical times when two Marys, upon finding the sepulchre of Christ to be empty, were comforted by angels. However, its origins actually date back before the time of Christ to ancient Roman culture. When the spring equinox arrived, the feast of Lupercalia was held to mark the end of winter, and to rejoice in the coming season of rebirth.

Alas, it’s no ordinary Pasquetta and just like Easter, it will be spent at home. So let’s make the best of it while being grateful for what we have: good reads, strong coffee, delicious food and each other’s virtual company. Enjoy your day!
