The demolishing of ironworks of Trieste on Sunday, 18 September, marks the end of an era for the city of Trieste.
The demolishing of Trieste’s ironworks marks the end of an era for the city of Trieste, which saw the controversial plant as part of Trieste’s skyline for over 120 years.
“It’s the beginning of a new life for the Servola neighborhood,” said Port Authority’s Zeno d’Agostino, “As well as for the port of Trieste. There are no other ports in Europe that have these rail transfer capacities. Trieste’s port is growing in a sustainable way.” President of FVG, Massimiliano Fedriga, pressed “the red button” together with the Italian minister Patuanelli, and 120 years of history collapsed before everyone’s eyes.
The demolishing of the hot area of Ferriera di Servola (or simply, ferriera) was accompanied by the much criticized on social networks fireworks. “It’s tacky”, “They don’t respect the feelings of people who used to work there”, and “what a sad spectacle” were some of the comments from the local viewers.
The conversion of the demolished area must be completed by 2026 as per NPR provisions.
