This Sunday’s Barcolana54 regatta award ceremony at the Rossetti theater was full of zest and surprises as the Deep Blue’s skipper, Wendy Shmidt, announced her gift to the city in the video address to the public.
“I am pleased to accept the first place trophy for the extraudinary Barcolana 54,” said Deep Blue’s skipper, Wendy Shmidt who led her maxi boat to victory this past October 9, in her video message. “We want to thank the people of Trieste for their remarkable hospitality,” said Shmidt after thanking the Barcolana organizers for sending her the beatiful trophy.
“In the celebration of the Deep Blue Victory in the Barcolana 2022 we would like to announce a gift of 100, 000 US dollars to BioMa in support of its work connecting people to the marine world all around us, so they can learn to understand, love it and protect it. We would like to turn our victory in Trieste into our victory for the ocean.”
The Biodiversitario Marino (BioMa) was established on the shore just outside of the Miramare park 35 years ago. Since 1986, the organization has been working to protect and study local wildlife, as well as educate the public (young and old) about what we can all do to keep our seas clean and full of beautiful marine life.
“We were very surprised and grateful,” Mitja Giualuz, president of the Barcolana, told us. “We can’t wait have them back here next year.”
