The Old Port of Trieste is to get a new life thanks to a 20 milion investment by the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, which will move its headquarters there.
A contract for the relaunch of the Old Port was signed this Tuesday afternoon, 29 November, in the region by the mayor of Trieste, Roberto Dipiazza, Port Authority’s, Zeno D’Agostino, and FVG’s president, Massimiliano Fedriga.
“Trieste is trully living a magical moment,” said mayor Dipiazza present at the press conference in the region. “We are grateful to the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia for thinking of Trieste’s future.”
“We’ll be giving up all of our Trieste’s locations and we’ll move our headquarters to the Old Port, precisely to wearhouses 7 and 10, as well as building 118,” said region’s president, Massimiliano Fedriga. “By that I mean, the buildings on the Rive, via Giulia, via Milano, via Trento, Corso Cavour, Via Carducci, and scala Cappuccini will all go on sale. The Piazza Unita’s quarters will of course remain intact.”
“With this signing we will launch The Old Port into the future,” added the beaming mayor of Trieste. “If we are here it’s only because we’ve all worked on this together.”
“It’s the beginning of a long successful road,” added Fedriga. “We need to set the goal of timing and quality. We need to start working fast on the goal at hand. We think that the Old Port has to be of public use. With the opening of the new buildings we will be giving jobs and possibilities to hundreds of people. We will use the regional resources to create the new.The region will invest 20 million euro on the requalification of the Old Port, and while we don’t have the exact date of the beginning of the works yet, we hope it will happen soon.”
It’s a shame there is no real vision for the old port other than selling these marvelous buildings off one by one to the highest bidder (Chinese; rich oil?); or demolishing them. There is a lack of imagination on the politicians and the private, selfish interests of the so-call Port Authority. No public works; no spaces for artists or healing artists; nothing for young people (maybe another shopping mall is the extent of their vision!). No affordable housing or parks or public seashore infrastructures . It could be turned into a lively and thriving cultural and historical center that brings tourists and creative people into our city. A real community focal point.
EXCELLENT BRILLIANT NEWS!!!
And in answer to Gary Brackett’s comment – have no fear, Trieste and FVG have ALWAYS been most resourceful, we’ve had to be through the ages, it’s the Trading Gateway between Mitteleuropa and Eastern Europe and a major Seaport with its own marvellous lagoon.
I am returning to my native Trieste after many years in South Africa where I had a very successful small business in Publishing as well as a small Art School, both of which I am going to practice in my wonderful hometown!
I have FULL FAITH in Trieste and FVG!!!
