Italian government intends to introduce an app to speed up tracking coronavirus contagion during post-lockdown phase.
PM Giuseppe Conte when talking about phase two at the senate yesterday said that social distancing measures and the wearing of face masks will be required “until a vaccine is available”, reports Italian news agency ANSA.
The prime minister, who addressed the Italian senate yesterday, also stated that the new coronavirus-tracking app would be optional, confirming that there would be no penalties for those who don’t sign up.
The app that is being designed by Milan-based company Bending Spoons will be used to track the contacts of people that tested positive for the virus. The Immuni app will allegedly respect security and privacy as government’s special commissioner for the coronavirus emergency Domenico Arcuri told ANSA earlier today. He also stated that the alternative was “more deprivation of liberty.”
Each smartphone with the installed app will continuously emit an anonymous ID code which will be detected within a few meters by other smartphone users with the same app. If one of the app-users reports that they tested positive for the virus, the app informs the people with whom they have been in close contact in the previous days.
Italian government assures that the app meets the criteria set by the EU: it is voluntary, anonymous and uses bluetooth technology. However, for the app to be effective – Arcuri says – it will need to be used by at least 60 per cent of the Italian population.
Our region’s governor Fedriga said in his interview with Rainews24 this morning that Friuli Venezia Giulia has already developed such app that was going to be launched this week which has been frozen in view of the eminent governmental decree.
